3 Tips for Getting the Grant

Arts always need funding and they always say the first grant is the hardest to get!

That’s certainly true, but with these top tips, you can speed your way to that first grant.

START EARLY

This is going to sound crazy…but you should start your search 2 years before you want to launch.

I know…you really have to think on a whole new timeline.

Most grants open once a year, so when you research and find a new one, it may not be open again for many months.

Then there is the grant writing process and once the committee has your application, it often takes another six months from there so….

“Plan ahead” takes on a whole new meaning when it comes to grants.

PAIR UP WITH A NON-PROFIT (OR TWO!)

There are very few grants for individual artists but there are many, many out there for non-profit organizations.

You can compete for very few spots, or you can work to create your project with a non-profit and apply together.

Your odds of success will rise exponentially.

GO TO THE INFO SESSIONS

Almost all grants offer (or even require) you to attend informational sessions about the grants.

Absolutely go!

You will learn so much valuable information, including whether you are eligible to apply and whether your project fits their specific requirements.

I always learn something new at these sessions that you can’t find in the small print anywhere else.

GO GET ‘EM

Every project and every grant program is different, so you’ll have to put in the time and effort to bring home the bacon of grant funding but…it’s doable with the patience, persistence, and planning ahead! For more on grants, watch Sarah’s video here.
